The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis involving individuals across the UK, linked to wipes. Following testing, Burkholderia spp (full identification pending) has been recovered from several non-sterile alcohol-free skin cleansing wipes, including those used for wound care and Needle and Syringe Programmes.
The first version of this alert on the potential contamination of non-sterile alcohol-free wipes was distributed in June 2025, as some treatment services, particularly Needle and Syringe Programmes (NSPs), do distribute wipes. As there are continuing cases, the alert has been updated, and health professionals are being reminded to check for and dispose of contaminated products.
Burkholderia stabilis is a type of bacteria that is typically found in the environment, such as in soil and water. Although it can be harmless, this bacterium can cause harm and serious infection in some extreme cases, particularly amongst vulnerable individuals.
The UKHSA are advising individuals administering first aid, wound cleaning, and NSPs to check their supplies for specific brands of non-sterile wipes.
Products to avoid are:
ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes.
Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free.
Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes.
Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes (testing revealed contamination with a Burkholderia strain not related to the outbreak cases).
Share this alert with those who might use similar products or work with those who do, and encourage them to seek help and advice. Report any unusual presentations or adverse reactions through local reporting channels. Stay alert and share this information.
