About HMP & Young Offender Institution (YOI) Stoke Heath

HMP and YOI Stoke Heath is a closed Category C adult male and young offender institution, with a small Category D unit located in Shropshire.

Our programmes and services

We deliver psychosocial substance use service services at this prison at HMP Stoke Heath.

Our services include:

  • ‘Stepping Stones Drug and Alcohol Programme’ - designed to support those people whose alcohol or drug consumption is at harmful or dependent levels, which is a low to medium intensity intervention.
  • ‘The Bridge Programme’ – an intensive and abstinence-based programme focusing on the journey to recovery and long-term treatment.
  • Needs-led care planning.
  • Individual key working sessions.
  • Motivational enhancement therapy (MET).
  • A wide range of standalone workshops and ‘in-cell’ packs aimed at harm minimisation, risk reduction, and relapse prevention.
  • Auricular acupuncture (acupuncture of the ears).
  • Mindfulness sessions.

At HMP Stoke Heath, we take pride in our Health and Wellbeing Champion (HAWC) scheme, through which prison residents are trained to support the healthcare team and their peers with health-related concerns.

Unlike other sites, our HAWCs work across the entire healthcare provision, not just in substance use. They have become embedded across the establishment and the success of the scheme has been recognised by the prison’s senior management team and external parties, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Our partners

Our Substance Use Team is part of an integrated healthcare service, working with our partners Shropshire Community Health Trust (prime provider) and Midlands Partnerships Foundation Trust (MPFT).

Referrals

Any prisoner can refer themselves (‘self-refer’) to the service through their in-cell laptops. If a staff member or third party makes a referral, we will assess the service user if they agree to engage. All prisoners are seen as part of their induction.
