HMP Cardiff is a category B men’s prison located in the centre of Cardiff, Wales.
At HMP Cardiff, we deliver a 12-week, abstinence-based drug treatment recovery programme called Y Bont, which means ‘The Bridge’ in Welsh.
‘Y Bont’ is based on the 12-step model for recovery from addiction, but with fully integrated ‘trauma informed’ elements.
Everyone will have the chance to learn useful coping skills and receive guidance to make real changes. Some of the reasons why we often find it hard to change - even when we want to - are explored, along with strategies for maintaining abstinence and creating different, less destructive, behaviour patterns.
Clients will be supported by trained Drug and Alcohol Practitioners. Our Practitioners can also support clients with advice and guidance on what through-the-gate support is available upon release.
At HMP Cardiff, we also deliver pre-release housing interventions through our Camau accommodation service. If you want to know more about Camau, please contact probationwalesadmin@forwardtrust.org.uk.
Canol Service - now delivered from within HMP Cardiff
The Canol Service is an integrated substance use and wellbeing support service delivered across the Cardiff and Vale prisons estate (HMP Cardiff, HMP Usk, HMP Prescoed). Working in partnership with G4S Community and Dr PA, The Forward Trust provides trauma-informed psychosocial support to men in custody, helping individuals access recovery, wellbeing and through-the-gate support throughout their custodial journey.
The service offers structured interventions, group work, workshops, wellbeing support and continuity of care, placing the individual at the centre of their recovery and helping them build healthier, more positive futures both in prison and beyond.
In HMP Cardiff, we work closely with Dyfodol Offender Intervention Service - Adferiad to deliver our services.
Any prison resident can refer themselves (‘self-refer’) to the service. If a staff member or third party makes a referral, we will assess the service user if they agree to engage. All residents of the prison are seen as part of their induction.
