Finding Freedom: My Journey with Alcohol

By Sam Taylor, Forward Connect Volunteer

Reflecting on my journey with alcohol, it’s hard to believe how much it dominated my life. Before anything else I loved, alcohol was my constant companion, shaping my experiences and decisions. It wasn’t just a drink; it was intertwined with my identity, a way to cope with the world around me.

However, nearly four years into my recovery, I’ve reached a place of profound change. Recently, I found myself on a cruise ship, surrounded by people enjoying their drinks. At first, I expected to feel that familiar pull, but to my surprise, I realised I didn’t notice it. It was liberating!

During a check-in with friends, I reflected on how far I’ve come. The journey hasn’t been easy, but the power of recovery is incredible. Instead of focusing on what I was missing, I was able to enjoy the moment and be present, truly savouring the experience without the shadow of alcohol looming over me.

This transformation is a testament to the strength of recovery. It’s not just about abstaining; it’s about reclaiming joy and finding freedom in new ways. I hope my journey can inspire others to see that recovery is possible and that there’s a life beyond alcohol—one filled with love, connection, and genuine happiness.
