Celebrating International Women’s Day at Forward

The Forward Trust proudly joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025. This year’s theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” resonates deeply with me and with the work we do every day.

It calls for meaningful, inclusive action to drive gender equality forward. But what does that really mean for us at Forward? How do we ensure we are not just reflecting on progress but actively pushing for change?

These are the questions I find myself asking, not just as a leader, but as a mother, a daughter, and a woman committed to social justice. Looking across our organisation, I see real progress in gender representation—across our Executive team, our Board of Trustees, and our Ambassadors. This shift is encouraging, but there’s always more to do.

A Personal Reflection

Thinking about this year’s IWD, I’m reminded of a powerful statement by Hillary Clinton:

“Human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights.”

I was 17 when I first heard those words. At that time, I was just beginning to understand the wider world and my place within it. Decades later, I’m acutely aware of how global conflicts, social divisions, and political instability continue to work against women in countless ways.

Through my career in politics, social justice, and now at The Forward Trust, I have seen firsthand the deep injustices women face—particularly those dealing with addiction, unemployment, the criminal justice system and trauma. I’ve also seen the incredible resilience and strength of women who, when given the right opportunities, transform their lives and communities.

How Forward is Driving Change

At Forward, we are committed to creating opportunities for women—not just within our workforce, but for the women we support.

Our skills and recovery programmes in prisons and communities empower women to overcome barriers, from substance use and unemployment to past trauma. These dedicated recovery programmes, employability training, and mentoring initiatives help women reclaim their independence and reach their full potential. Too often, their challenges stem from childhood trauma, abuse, and hardship. Addressing these issues is central to our mission.

Leading by Example

“As a leader, I have a responsibility to help make women’s human rights a reality—ensuring equality of access, workplace safety, and protection from harassment. This is about making Forward a better place for the women who work here and the women who rely on our services.”

I’m proud of the work being done by our ForWomen Employee Resource Group (ERG), which has been instrumental in driving awareness and advocacy. From celebrating IWD to spotlighting key dates like Women’s Health Month (May), International Equal Pay Day (September 18), and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls (November 25), their efforts are making a tangible impact.

To mark IWD, the ERG will host an internal event on 7 March, inviting staff to nominate women at Forward who inspire them. This initiative shines a light on the exceptional contributions of women across our organisation.

Here’s a small selection of this year’s (anonymised) nominations:

  • “She goes above and beyond for her clients—compassionate, empathetic, and deeply committed to her work.”
  • “Her dedication to supporting a vulnerable, high-risk client group never wavers. Her passion is evident every day.”
  • “She manages to balance professionalism with authenticity. Her humour has carried us through the toughest times.”
  • “Her knowledge, dedication, and care for those engaging with our services are truly remarkable.”
  • “She makes everyone feel valued and included, both professionally and personally.”
  • “Service users regularly praise her warmth, dedication, and professionalism.”

These powerful words reflect just how much Forward is doing to uphold this year’s IWD theme—advancing gender equality for every woman, regardless of background or circumstances.

A Call to Action

International Women’s Day is more than a celebration; it’s a reminder of the work still to be done. It’s a day to acknowledge achievements, challenge inequality, and commit to real change.

At The Forward Trust, we know that many women—especially those facing addiction, mental health challenges, or involvement in the criminal justice system—experience profound inequalities. Addressing these disparities isn’t optional; it’s essential.

So, as we mark International Women’s Day 2025, let’s make it a day of action, progress, and hope. For all women. For all girls. For the future we want to see.
