Event review: The Forward Trust National Reunion celebrates recovery in style

Over 400 people attended the event at St John at Hackney (Hackney Church) at the beginning of the year to celebrate personal achievements in recovery

On 27 January, the Forward Trust held its annual National Reunion event to showcase the incredible stories of graduates, staff, and ambassadors from across the charity – and our largest ever turnout for a reunion event.

This family-friendly event brought together a diverse mix of individuals from all parts of the country, and with different reasons for their connection to The Forward Trust.

Our short video recap from The Forward Trust National Reunion, 27th January 2024

Kicking the day off, Forward welcomed 440 guests from all around the country, some having set-off as early as 3am to make the event!

The event was opened by our Chair, the Honourable David Bernstein, who reflected on milestones from the past year and a look ahead for our plans in the future, and Jason Moore, Director of Substance Misuse Services.

Undoubtedly, the most memorable parts of the day belonged to our guest speakers who kindly shared their own inspirational testimonies (‘shares’) of how they started and maintained their recovery.

This included, Tony, Forward staff member, who said:

“In the beginning, somebody shared their story. They did that for me. Back then, I changed my life. So now, this is me giving back.

“Sharing your story is like the ultimate thing you can do really – because you give somebody hope.”

There was also opportunity for any guests that wanted to take the microphone and express themselves – including further shares, but also creative performances and poetry aligned to this year’s theme ‘Community and Creativity’.

Throughout the event, information stalls provided guests with the chance to find out more about our work – including Forward Connect – but also other charities across the sector.

There was also an informative talk by Councillor, Sade Etti, Clissold Ward, Deputy Cabinet Member for Homelessness, Housing Needs and Rough Sleeping.

Before the close, guests were invited to enjoy refreshments, including a vintage-style ice-cream cart and hotdogs, before closing remarks by David Bernstein.

The event will return to Hackney Church next year (date TBA).
