Martyn P’s story
I was having a lot of problems. I had really bad mental health, and felt like everyone was after me. I had been smoking spice, and was lying to my family so I could buy it from other people on the wing.
I didn’t care about myself, let alone anyone else. I just wanted to get rid of my feelings and bad memories, but the drugs just made it worse. It took a toll on me, until one day, on the wing, I was approached by Steve and Woody from The Forward Trust.
Since completing the programme, I have learnt a lot about myself. My family wants to know me, I’m clean and feeling better. I see where I went wrong and don’t want to go through that again.
They asked if I would like to attend Forward’s Bridge Programme. I knew I needed help, so I agreed, and moved to another wing to begin the programme. I stopped taking drugs, and got my head into staying clean and being a better person. It was difficult at first, but got easier as time went by.
Since completing the programme, I have learnt a lot about myself. My family wants to know me, I’m clean and feeling better. I see where I went wrong and don’t want to go through that again.
I now have the tools to move forward with my life and help others with their problems, which also helps my recovery. I’m a Peer Supporter, and I like to be of service to others who need help. After all, I have been there myself.
Following my graduation, I became a prisoner adviser and would meet every new person that came to HMP Send. I used my experiences and position to actively encourage women to seek guidance and support for their substance misuse issues.
